PRODUCER - Making Mischief

In December 2023, I was commissioned by Compton Verney Arts Gallery to produce the Making Mischief cultural program. My role involved sourcing and commissioning an artist to lead workshops with community groups and produce artwork for display on the gallery’s historic facade.

Together with the Compton Verney team, we commissioned visual artist Jane Thakoordin to co-create and deliver workshops with a community group from Saathi House in Aston, Birmingham.

Workshops

The workshops, held at Saathi House, offered women the opportunity to explore new skills and collaboratively create a large-scale dressing for the facade of the Compton Verney building.

In March the group visited Compton Verney to see the art exhibition Making Mischief and immerse themselves in the history and traditions of festival costumes and dress. The experience stimulated great discussions on the comparison of both cultures and traditions, they identified the similarities with their own cultural dressings, musical instruments and dance movements.

The banners they created were proudly displayed on the gallery’s frontage, bringing movement, sound, and colour, serving as a vibrant cultural statement. The culmination of the project was marked by an evening of live music, the unveiling of the banners, and performances of folklore traditions. The community members reflected on how their cultural dress, music, and dance shared similarities with those of other traditions, sparking rich conversations about cultural connections.
